7th November 2023 - Scotland's Porridge

Biggar Probus Club met for the third meeting of their autumn session on 7 November 2023.

Our speaker was Robbie Glen, who spent most of his working life in the Scottish Prison Service, leading him to being  Assistant Governor at Barlinnie, and then Governor at Saughton and the Women’s prison at Cornton Vale.

He related his experiences in prisons to his life at home and with friends, showing us how prisoners try to cope with their confinement and how difficult it can be for them.  He also showed how men serving long sentences can learn how to survive once released, though he did admit that rehabilitation is unpredictable and sometimes does not work despite the best efforts of those who pursue it.

From such a serious and complex subject,  Robbie was able to present a very humorous and entertaining talk on life behind “Closed doors”, illustrating his awareness and compassion,  which are strong ingredients in his approach to  dealing with this difficult section of society.

Although time has brought changes in attitudes and in the way prisons are run, they will always be a part of society we all need to be concerned about.

The vote of thanks was given by Brian Swaine.

The next meeting is on 21 November in Biggar Municipal Hall at 10.00 when we will welcome Fiona Foley who will tell us about her work with Stained Glass. All are welcome to attend.
