7th February 2012 - Organic Farming.
Pete Ritchie
At
Biggar Probus Club
meeting on 7 Feb, President Jim Watt, welcomed our speaker for the day, Pete
Ritchie from Whitmuir Organics, Pete and his wife Heather established Whitmuir
Organic Farm some 10 years ago. This farm is on a rather exposed location just
off the A701 near Lamancha. From relatively modest beginings, they now have a
very active organic unit which is well supported locally, also a community
bakery, a bee-keepers group, and with their new shop supplying all types of meat
and organic produce, along with a very attractive restaurant and adjacent
gallery, Whitmuir now employ some 20 people in various disciplines. Their
business model provides an excellent example of locally produced food, supported
locally, and actively communicates a green classroom throughout the whole
district and beyond. During his talk Pete touched on many aspects of
the subject of organic/local produce etc. This led to a very interesting and
lively discussion during the question and answer session. An appreciative vote
of thanks was given by Robert Ross. The next meeting is on 21 Feb. when there
will be talk by Mr John Cumming on finance and investments.
