7th December 2021 - Young Person's Forum Biggar High School The President welcomed members to the Open meeting on Tuesday
7th December and introduced the Captain and Vice Captains of Biggar High School
for a welcome return after all the restrictions over the last eighteen months.
The experiences shared with us from Miles
Wearden Captain, Niamh Cairns and Morris McDiarmid Vice Captains
gave us an insight how difficult education had been for some during this
time. Online or blended learning doesn’t suit everyone, some folk just like to
be in a classroom.  As an older audience
we knew this but hearing it first-hand reminded us again of the difficulties
students had had to face and overcome.
We also heard of the support that had been put in place to help students
that were challenged in this new approach to study, its success and of the
return towards the normality of exams! The Captains meet weekly to plan
initiatives that help the students; one in particular that caught the audience’s
attention was assisting students into having a part time job and funding
Alzheimer research. Our debate with our speakers reminded us again that Biggar
High School cares about learning and cares about its pupils. Bill Allen gave the vote of thanks. Our next Open Meeting should have been on the 21st December when we were to meet to hear Roy Johnstone on the Rise and Fall of Napoleon Bonaparte, however, due to the rising number of Covid infections it was decided to cancel this as a precautionary measure.
