Alan Cameron
President Jim Watt welcomed members and visitors from
Larkhall Probus Club. He introduced the speaker Alan Cameron from the Business
Archives Council.
His talk covered the work carried out by the Council, particularly in relation
to the North Sea oil industry. Established in 1960, the
council's purpose is to create archives of past and existing industries, mainly
steel, shipbuilding, mining and latterly the oil industry. the aim
of the council is to ensure that technical, financial and social information is
not lost to future generations. In 2006 the creation of an archive
of the oil industry became the council's main project. This task is
being undertaken in collaboration with organisations such as Aberdeen
University, Aberdeen City Council, oil companies and Norwegian oil interests.
The archive will contain technical information relation to rig design and
construction, pipeline installation and decommissioning of oil wells.
It will also collate financial details of oil company and government decisions.
Some of the social implications include employment, safety and the impact on
local and national population. Alan was thanked for an interesting
and enlightening talkwhich was enjoyed by all. the next meeting on
march 20th is the AGM and last meeting of the year. The speaker will
be Claire Pinchbeck on 'The Secret Life of a Hotelier'.
