5th October 2021 - Professor Murray Campbell

A Scientific History of Music and Musical Instruments

Blinking in the autumn sunshine, Biggar Probus Club emerged from Lockdown to try and return to a degree of normality in life.

President  Alistair Pate welcomed members back to our programme so rudely interrupted in March 2020.

Our speaker was then to have been Professor Murray Campbell, Professor Emeritus of Musical Acoustics at Edinburgh University, and also an active musician in the area, who kindly agreed to “join us after the break”.

On the subject “Scientific History of Music and Musical Instruments”, Murray , aided by his wife Patsy, proceeded to explain and play the multitude  of instruments surrounding them. From cow horns to exotic Middle Eastern instruments, they all produced their own unique sounds, as did a length of plastic hose and plastic funnel !

The evolution of musical instruments was explained and the fact that it will continue as  the electronic  age progresses.

Even members with hearing difficulties were not at a disadvantage and were able to follow an intriguing and educational presentation enjoyed by all.

The Club meets again on 19th October, 10 for 10.30am, when Mr Jim Summers will be talking on “Burntisland 1883”.

Remember, Ladies are most welcome and there is no membership fee this year.
