5th January 2016 - Annual Lunch with A One Act Comedy

Bill & Hazel Gourlay

President Nigel MacKenzie took great pleasure in welcoming the forty-seven members and  guests to the Club’s annual New Year Luncheon held in the Cornhill House Hotel, Biggar on Tuesday 5th January 2016.  He reminded us that in his Highland homeland it was customary to celebrate New Year on the 12th of January so that our Luncheon today was timely.  Our Vice President Brian Swaine gave an extended Grace reminding us of those less fortunate in the world today and that we be mindful of our own good fortune. The venue is splendid, the food delicious and the service first class.  Once tea and coffee had been served, President Nigel invited us to toast Her Majesty the Queen, as is customary in Probus, followed by an introduction to our two local Thespians, Bill and Hazel Gourlay. The play enacted was described as a dark comedy and we were drawn into a Yorkshire couple’s seaside ‘chalet’, not to be confused with a mere ‘hut’ according to ‘Vera’ and to discover that both parties had been less than honest with each other. Indeed, by the plays end both had set out to poison the other by devious means! The gestures and especially the interchange between them in the Yorkshire dialect was a master-class in the acting profession by two consummate artists. The performance was hugely enjoyed by all present and the vote of thanks was proposed by Past President Walter Watson. President Nigel, having thanked Past President Ian Dewar for organising today’s event, brought the Luncheon to a close by reminding everyone that our next meeting is on Tuesday 19th January. This is the second ‘Open Day’ of our season and will be an illustrated talk by Lynn Gibson and Christine Riddoch about The Work of the Garvald Community. All are most welcome to join us.
