5th February 2013 - The New Lanark Roof Garden.

Jane Masters

At our meeting on 5th February, President Robert Kirkhope welcomed a large turnout of members and visitors before introducing the guest speaker of the day, Jane Masters, Heritage Manager at New Lanark.   Jane's presentation was on the New Lanark Roof Garden – a Garden in the Sky.  She explained that the decision to locate a garden on the flat roof of Mill 2 was influenced by the views of Robert Owen who believed strongly that the benefits arising from the environment and natural history was essential for happy, healthy communities.  Careful weight and structural surveys were carried out to ensure the garden would pose no risks to the A-listed building.  The final design, with its pattern of swirls and curves, is representative of the water wheels and lines of threads through the mill machinery. A wide range of plants was chosen to provide colour and interest throughout the year together with a number of sculptures in various materials.  Jane concluded with an outline of the recent work to laser scan and produce a 3D digital model of New Lanark as part of the Scottish Ten project.  Jane was thanked for her very informative talk on a fascinating topic. The Club's next meeting will be held on Tuesday 19th February at 10am in the Municipal Hall.
