5th December 2023 - High School Forum

Our meeting on 5 December was the annual Open Forum with the Captains and Vice Captains from Biggar High School. We were joined this year by Captains Molly Stewart and Mhairi Spence, and Vice Captains Kirsty Clay and Katie Lydon, who were welcomed by the President, Neil Ingram.

The meeting began with brief introductions from each of them, explaining their roles at school and their main interests, both sporting, particularly netball and dancing, and volunteering in various areas. They also  indicated what they hoped to study at University, the subjects included physics, audiology, law and marine biology. They mentioned how their interests had changed as they took on more responsibilities in Sixth Year, and how they were involved in mentoring to reduce the effects of bullying and disruptive behaviour in the whole school.

In the following discussions with  the audience we covered a wide range of subjects including how the school had coped with recovery from the disruptions of  Covid, the increased availability of school groups and clubs, and how lack of public transport affects students living in outlying communities around Biggar. We also discussed whether the School offered a good balance between technical and academic subjects, and how this was affected in rural areas by the difficulty in recruiting teachers for certain subjects.

This is always a popular meeting  - our members were impressed by their enthusiastic approach to telling us about themselves and how well they supported each other in answering our questions.

The Vote of Thanks was given by Thelma Good.

Our final meeting of the year will be at 10.00 on Tuesday 19 December in the Municipal Hall, when there will be a Christmas Quiz.  Everyone is welcome to attend.
