4th March 2014 - Images of the West Highlands and Islands

John Peter

On Tuesday 4 March 2014 President Michael Heale .welcomed an excellent presence of members with two guests from Carluke Probus Club

Guest speaker was John Peter a well renowned photographer who gave an illustrated talk on “Images of the West Highlands and Islands” Our journey commenced at Loch Lomond with a view of “The Maid of the Loch” set magnificently against the backdrop of Ben Lomond, we then meandered through Arrocher, Cairndow to be presented with a panoramic view of Inverary across the reflective watery expanse of Loch Fyne. A quick sail along the Crinan Canal to the village of Crinan before arriving in Oban. I brief visit to Mull and Iona Abbey before arriving at Fort William. We were then treated to a magical shot of the “Jacobite” train crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct billowing smoke on its journey to Mallaig.

No West Highland journey would be complete without going over the sea to Skye and the views of the majestic Red Cuillins that had been captured in the rare lighting depicting the reddish colour. Next port of call was Ullapool before viewing the hills where the Scottish gold rush held a short lived hope of fortune for some!

At most places featured in the presentation a gourmet resume was given on excellent hostelries for the insatiable Munro Baggers to recharge their energy.

By the time we arrived at Durness and Betty Hill plus a quick visit to Smoo Caves everyone was physically exhausted, that did not deter the many questions on photographic techniques utilised by John when acquiring these pictures all of which were most adequately dealt with.

This excellent morning was rounded off with a most enthusiastic vote of thanks from the members.

This meeting was closed with the President announcing an open meeting on Tuesday 18 March 2014 to which members could invite wives, lovers or girlfriends to enjoy a challenging meeting to be given by Helen Morrison on the topic “The drama and the battles of the Covenanters”.
