3rd January 2014 - Annual Lunch with 'Just a Little Bit of Fun'

Alex Baird

On Friday, January 3, Biggar Probus Club held its annual new Year lunch in Cornhill House Hotel.   A total of 49 members and partners attended and were very well looked after, as always, by the hotel who provided an excellent lunch.

After a very convivial meal, they were entertained by Alex Baird of Motherwell with 'Just a Little Bit of Fun' which was a canty and couthy miscellany of Scottish Poetry.

Alex is a well known speaker on the Burns circuit but on this occasion he gave examples of a range of poetry, in Scots, from other poets, including W D Cocker, Janet Paisley and Alexander Anderson among others.

His presentation highlighted the vigour and humour of poerty using Scots and how the language can be more expressive and meaning ful than English.   He highlighted this by quoting from a version of Auld Lang Syne in English which did not bring out the meaning or emotion of Robert Burns' original.

The members and their guests were thoroughly entertained and their appreciation was conveyed by Nigel MacKenzie who gave the vote of thanks.

The next meeting is on 21st January 2014 when Anne Mathieson will be talking about Mary Fleming.   New members are always welcome.
