3rd December 2024 - High school Forum
Our meeting on 3 December was the annual Open Forum with the Captains and Vice
Captains from Biggar High School. We were joined this year by Captains Poppy
Mellanby and Lewis Toal, and Vice Captains Mirren McMaster and Ayla Miller, who
were welcomed by the President, Neil Ingram.
The meeting began with brief introductions from each of them, explaining their
roles at school and their main interests, both sporting, particularly rugby and
dancing, and volunteering in various areas, including liaising with the Primary
School. They also indicated what they
hoped to study at University, the subjects included astrophysics, architecture,
and engineering. They mentioned how they had taken
on more responsibilities in Sixth Year, including running school events like
Charities Week and the inter-school sports day, and getting involved in
persuading more girls to study STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering
and mathematics), and the refurbishment of the Youth Project.
In the following discussions with
the
audience
we covered a wide range of subjects including the need to encourage more
students into STEM subjects, how AI will alter all our lives and how they might
adjust to living in cities when to move to higher education.
We also discussed how the lack of public
transport affects students living in outlying communities around Biggar.
This has been a popular meeting for many
years – we are grateful to successive groups of senior students for
keeping us in touch with their lives,
and demonstrating an enthusiastic approach to telling us about themselves and
how they see the world.
Our final meeting will be at 10.00 on Tuesday 17 December in the Municipal Hall,
when there will be a Christmas Quiz.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
