3rd December 2013 - Open Day

Biggar High School Forum

AT the club's annual open day the school captains and vice-captains from Biggar High School gave a presentation to members and guests.  The school team, captains Yvonne Chappell and Aird Jardine and Vice captains Alice Dobbie and Charley Tulley, spoke, with ever increasing confidence, of their personal aspirations and ambitions, and of their place in the wider Biggar community.

In spite of her academic obligations, Yvonne has made the time to start a drama group in the school.   This now has a membership of 40 from all year groups and has the support of South Lanaerkshire Leisure and Culture.   She is hoping to study drama at university.

Aird is driven by a love of rugby and has already arranged to spend a year in Australia on a school's teaching program.

Many of Alice's family are teachers and she stressed that she did not want to follow that path.  She helped organise the St Andrews Hospice Fun Run earlier in the year and hopes to read social anthropology at university.

Like Alice, fellow vice-captain Charley is community-minded and took an active role in a recent charity week in the school.   His future lies in Interior Design and he hopes to read this subject at university.

The students answered probing questions from their older audience with aplomb and, when the questions turned political, they answered with diplomatic tact.

The next meeting is on December 17th, when Jack Meikle will talk on his life as a shepherd.
