 2nd October 2012 - Gilbert & Sullivan's Music. Bill Love
The first meeting of the new season took place on
Tuesday 2nd October in the Municpal Hall.  President Robert Kirkhope introduced
Bill Love who gave a fascinating talk on Gilbert and Sullivan.  Bill had been
addicted to the music from the age of ten when he saw the operetta HMS Pinafore.
With Gilbert writing the libretto and Sullivan the music the success of
operettas, the Pirates of Penzance (first performed in Paignton in Devon),  HMS
Pinafore, The Mikado, Iolanthe, Trial by Jury, the Gondoliers, etc. made them
very rich, so much so that they built the Savoy Theatre and the Savoy Hotel in
London.  The Savoy Theatre was the first to have electric lighting in the
world.  Professional performances by the D'oyle Carte Company ceased in 1982 and
the music is now carried on worldwide by amateur companies.   Buxton in
Derbyshire hosts an international music festival in their memory to this day.
After answering many questions the Club showed their appreciation for an
excellent speaker.
