2nd April 2013 - AGM and Members Talks Ian Dewar & Michael Heale The President welcomed members to the last meeting of the current session which was also the Club's AGM. In his summing up of the year, the President thanked the members for their continued support with a special mention of thanks to the Speakers Convenor, Walter Watson, for the very excellent programme that had entertained and informed us throughout. Michael Heale was then installed as the new President. Two members, Ian Dewar and Michael Heale then gave a short talk on aspects of their lives. Ian, on living in Kenya for his first seventeen years, took us colourfully through the family travels around the country as his father developed his career as a civil engineer. Placed in a boarding school in Nairobi at the time of the Mau Mau troubles, Ian vividly described the security in place at that time, leaving Kenya in 1958 to return to Edinburgh to study accountancy. Michael then described his boyhood fascination with buses that became a lifelong career with London Transport at a time when belief in Public Transport was at its highest. We all expect buses to turn up on time and Michael gave us an insight into the diligence that goes into setting and timing routes before a route is approved. Acquired skills that seconded him to Mexico to assist in setting up a parallel operation. Robert Kirkhope gave the vote of thanks. The new session starts on the 1st October when old and new members will be made most welcome. |
