20th February 2018 -  A Passage to India

Bob Copeland

The President welcomed members and guests to our meeting on the 20th February 2018 and introduced Bob Copeland who gave a photographic account of his trip to India.  A country of some 1.35 billion people, India is a land of contrasts from the huge statues of Shiva and Ganesh in Delhi and the Taj Mahal in Agra to the poverty of the countryside where leprosy is still in evidence.  It is a diverse country with some seven religions and low life expectancy. Bob visited Delhi where he saw the India Gate memorial to Indian soldiers of both World Wars and the largest mosque in India, holding some 48,000 people and then moved on to Rajghat, which is the final resting place of Gandhi. From there his travels took him to the pink city of Jaipur and the Jantar Mantar observatory and then to the Amber Fort.  The city of temples, Kajasaho, followed where he saw the local people in the villages and then on to Agra for the highlight of the Taj Mahal in all its glory.  The final destination was Varanasi or Benares, the holy city on the Ganges and spiritual capital of India where people come to die and have their ashes scattered on the river.  Bob captured perfectly the essence of India with his beautiful photography. The next meeting is at 10.30 am on 6th March when Robert Wilson’s talk will be “Tales of Courage – Carluke’s VCs”.
