1st March 2022 - Call Ma Bluff

Stewart Houston

Our 2022 programme got under way again on Tuesday 1 March when we welcomed Stewart Houston to the Municipal Hall.

His quiz was Call Ma Bluff and we were given possible definitions of a dozen Scots words of dubious origin, all of them authentic he assured us.

He kept us guessing and exposed our very limited knowledge of vernacular Scots, with words like Trodlicks, Belcher, Switchbell and Dingle Dousie. For each of the words we were given  three possible meanings, and then left to decide amongst our groups which was correct. We didna do very weel!

We then finished with three words from Burns’ poems, on which we did much better, so we are quite well-read if still pretty ignorant.

If you’re still none the wiser, Trodlicks are sheep droppings, Belcher means good cheer, Switchbell is a Lanarkshire word for an earwig and a Dingle Dousie is a torch made of peat used to light bonfires!

The vote of thanks was proposed by Neil Ingram.

Our next meeting will be at 10 am on  Tuesday 15 March when the speaker will be Bruce Keith on Brigescapes. All are welcome to attend.
