1st December 2015 - Visit to Peru (open day)

Biggar High School Pupils

Vice President Brian Swaine welcomed a full house to Biggar Probus Club’s Open Day on Tuesday 1st December in the Municipal Hall expressing a particular pleasure at the presence of the large number of lady guests. He then introduced four representatives of the “Peru Cru” from Biggar High School to talk about their trip to Peru.  Henry Adams, Jake Cameron, Samantha Lane and Moira Tomson.  Sadly it was not possible to work the show of pictures and the gallant four instead gave a resume of their trip. An enormous amount of preplanning was undertaken and the incredible sum of £75,000 was raised in advance to pay for the 14 Students and three Teachers who went for a month.   Arriving by air at the Capital Lima they were quickly transported on their tour but did have some time to site- see Lima later on their way home. They toured the country extensively including on one occasion a 70 hour bus journey.  The Peruvian people were very welcoming and they sampled the local foods and visited two schools.  They saw much wild life including exotic birds, sea lions and insects and great contrasts of magnificent scenery.  From climbing 4,700 metres up in the Andes Mountains, into a valley, onto the Amazon river sources region, into the Jungle and pedalo racing in the desert and fishing.  They witnessed the Inca Festival of the Sun and enjoyed the hot springs. Flying home they stopped over in New York and had enough time to see the main siites, a total contrast to the experiences of Peru. An adventure they will always remember. John Lindsay gave a hearty vote of thanks.  The next meeting is on Tuesday 15th December at 10.00am when the talk will be on Beautiful Switzerland. Potential new members are always welcome.
