18th October 2011 - A Trip to The Holy Land.

Ruth Bryden

President Jim Watt opened the meeting welcoming all to this, the second meeting of the Autumn season, and introducing Ruth Brydon, the guest speaker, who's subject was A Visit to The Holy Land.  Ruth, in her preamble, said she had gone on the visit with a group from Lanark under the guiding hand of Rev Alison Meikle, minister at St Nicholas Church in Lanark.  There had been fundraising projects before the trip, so the proceeds from these were given direct to the various orphanages and rehabilitation centres which they visited.

Ruth's photography began with a shot of The Golden gate Hotel's roof garden, a quite impressive creation highlighting the constant need for water gathering and conservation.   They saw the dense, salty, evaporating Dead Sea, the spot where Jesus wept over Jerusalem and magnificent olive trees, said to have been growing at the time of Jesus.  There was also the Mount of Temptation, The Mount Carmil, with that fertile valley which stretched to the horizon, and the quite astonishing sight of the great viaduct structures laid down by King Herod to bring water from afar to serve the city.

In his vote of thanks Sandy Laird expressed the gratitude of the club to Ruth for her interesting and comprehensive account of a rather special place.  Her photography and verbal account had given them a delightful morning.
