16th January 2024 - Alan Broadfoot

Scotland's Air Ambulance

Biggar Probus Club met for their first meeting of the New Year on 16 January 2024.

Our speaker was Club member Alan Broadfoot, who is a volunteer for Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance (SCAA), the organisation which provides air ambulances for the NHS in Scotland.

Alan has previously volunteered for Yorkshire Air Ambulance, so he was able to explain how the service is provided in England and Scotland. In Scotland there are 4 helicopters, two of which are provided by SCAA , and the other two are provided by NHS. The SCAA aircraft are staffed by 12 paramedics, on secondment from the NHS, and a team of 4 pilots. The air ambulances provide a lifeline service for remote and rural communities, and are able to reach 90% of Scotland within 25 minutes.  In England the helicopters are entirely provided by voluntary organisations.

Alan also explained how SCAA raise funds to cover their annual running costs of £5.8 million.  Their main sources of income are through events run by volunteers and their life-saving weekly lottery. After answering questions Alan showed us the range of merchandise that is available at events and online.

The vote of thanks was given by Bill Allan.

The next meeting is on Tuesday 6 February in Biggar Municipal Hall at 10.00 when we will welcome Jim Watt who will tell us about Quintinshill, Britain’s Worst Railway Disaster. All are welcome to attend.
