15th November 2016 - The New Queensferry Crossing

Brian Curle

At their most recent meeting, new members and guests were welcomed by a large turnout of members. Brian Curle, a lifelong bridge enthusiast, gave a most interesting presentation on the history and work in progress of the New Queensferry Crossing . Traffic on the old 1965 bridge has more than doubled from 30,000 to 65,000 vehicles daily. Brian linked the history and technology of this bridge with that of the new bridge, and pointed out their similarities and differences in design and construction. His audio-visual effects gave a clear `bird`s eye` view of the bridge and the new approach roads. Members were given a greater understanding of the complexity of the whole project. The cost of the New Queensferry Crossing is estimated at £11 billion, is under budget, and is due to open in May 2017. This is more than ten times the cost of the old bridge. The vote of thanks was given by Robert Kirkhope who intimated that the next meeting is on 6th December at 10.30.am and is an Open Day with the students of the Young Persons Forum from Biggar High School.
